About College Metropolis

The Mission

Expanding Selective College Opportunity

College Metropolis is an educational initiative focused on expanding access to selective colleges and universities for high-achieving students from all backgrounds.

Each year, thousands of talented students graduate from high schools across the United States with the academic ability to attend highly selective institutions. Yet many of these students—particularly those from low-income backgrounds—never apply to the colleges where they would be strong candidates for admission.

College Metropolis was created to help students, families, and educators better understand the landscape of selective colleges and the opportunities these institutions can provide. By translating research on college access into clear information and practical resources, the initiative seeks to help more students discover institutions where they can thrive academically and pursue ambitious educational pathways.

The Origin of the Initiative

From Research to Practical Tools

College Metropolis emerged from research on college access, social capital, and the factors that influence how students navigate the college admissions process.

This research highlights how access to information, institutional guidance, and supportive networks can significantly shape students’ educational trajectories. Students who have access

to knowledgeable mentors and institutional guidance are more likely to explore ambitious college options and apply to institutions that match their academic potential.

College Metropolis was developed to translate these research insights into accessible information and resources that can support students, families, and counselors as they navigate the college search process.

Research Foundation

Grounded in Research on Opportunity and Social Capital

The initiative is informed by research across multiple disciplines, including economics, sociology, and education.

Scholars have shown that talented students from lower-income backgrounds often face informational barriers when exploring selective colleges. Research on undermatching has documented that many high-achieving students apply to and enroll in colleges below the level of institutions for which they are academically qualified.

Research led by economist Raj Chetty and colleagues has also demonstrated that selective colleges can serve as powerful engines of economic mobility for talented students from lower-income backgrounds.

At the same time, sociological research on social capital highlights the important role that counselors, educators, and institutional agents play in helping students access information and opportunities that shape educational pathways.

These insights help inform the mission of College Metropolis: expanding access to the information and guidance that help talented students discover institutions where they can succeed.

Long-Term Vision

Strengthening Pathways to Opportunity

The long-term vision of College Metropolis is to help build a more transparent and accessible college landscape for students and families.

The initiative seeks to support this goal by developing tools and resources that help students identify selective colleges where they are academically competitive and where strong financial aid opportunities may make attendance possible.

A key component of this effort is the development of the California Selective College Opportunity Initiative, a platform designed to help students and counselors explore selective colleges in a more structured and informed way.

By strengthening access to information and expanding awareness of the opportunities available at selective institutions, College Metropolis aims to help more students pursue ambitious educational pathways and fully develop their potential.

College Metropolis reflects a broader commitment to expanding educational opportunity by helping talented students better understand the landscape of higher education and the pathways that can shape their futures.
